Part 1: Introduction & Interview

Q1

What do you usually do when you have a little time to yourself?

Sample response

When I get a bit of free time, I usually do something simple like listening to music or watching short travel videos online. If I have a little longer, I like going for a walk because it clears my head and helps me recharge.

Q2

Do you prefer spending your evenings at home or going out?

Sample response

Most of the time, I prefer staying at home in the evening, especially after a busy day. It just feels more आरामदायक to cook something nice, watch a series, or read for a while, although I do enjoy going out occasionally at weekends.

Q3

Have your interests changed since you were a child?

Sample response

Yes, quite a lot, actually. When I was a child, I was mainly into outdoor games and cartoons, but now I’m more interested in things like reading, podcasts, and activities that help me relax or learn something new.

Q4

Are there any hobbies you would like to try in the future?

Sample response

I’d really like to try pottery in the future. It seems both creative and calming, and I think making something with my hands would be a nice break from spending so much time on a screen.

Q5

Do you enjoy doing things alone or with other people?

Sample response

It depends on the activity, to be honest. I enjoy social things like eating out or playing sports with friends, but for relaxing, I definitely prefer being alone because I can slow down and do exactly what I want.

Q6

How much time do you usually have for relaxation during the week?

Sample response

During the week, I probably get one or two hours a day, but it’s usually broken up rather than one long period. On weekdays, my free time mainly comes in the evening once I’ve finished work or study.

Q7

What kinds of things do people your age like doing for enjoyment?

Sample response

A lot of people my age seem to enjoy fairly casual things, like meeting friends for coffee, going to the gym, watching films, or just scrolling through social media. Short trips and trying new restaurants are also really popular, especially at weekends.

Q8

Do you think it is important to have a hobby? Why?

Sample response

Yes, I think it’s really important. A hobby gives people a mental break from work or study, and it also adds some balance to life, so you don’t feel like every day is just responsibilities and pressure.

Q9

Did you have more opportunities for enjoyment when you were younger?

Sample response

In some ways, yes. When I was younger, I had fewer responsibilities, so it was easier to enjoy myself without thinking about deadlines or practical issues. On the other hand, I have more freedom now, so the opportunities are different rather than completely less.

Q10

What do you usually do to relax after a busy day?

Sample response

Usually, I take a shower, change into comfortable clothes, and then do something quiet like listening to music or watching a light comedy. I try not to do anything too demanding because I need a proper mental reset before going to bed.

Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

Describe an activity you enjoy doing in your spare time. You should say: - When you usually do it - Where and with whom you do it - What you like most about it And explain why this activity is important to you.

Sample response

One activity I really enjoy in my spare time is going for a long walk while listening to music or a podcast. To begin with, I usually do this in the late afternoon or early evening, especially after I’ve had a busy day and need to unwind a little. I normally go to a park near my home or sometimes just walk around quiet streets in my neighborhood. Most of the time I do it alone, which I actually prefer, because it gives me a chance to think clearly and enjoy a bit of peace. That said, now and then I go with a close friend, and that can be enjoyable too because we talk about life, work, and whatever is on our minds. What I like most about this activity is the sense of calm it gives me. Walking is simple, but it really helps me reset mentally. If I’m stressed or tired, even thirty or forty minutes can make a huge difference. Another thing is that it doesn’t require any special equipment or planning, so I can do it almost anytime. What stood out to me over time is how much this small habit improves my mood. It helps me stay active, but more importantly, it gives me space away from screens and noise. Overall, it’s important to me because it’s one of the easiest and healthiest ways for me to relax, reflect, and feel more balanced.

Part 3: Two-way Discussion

Q1

Why do some people find it difficult to relax in their daily lives?

Sample response

I think one major reason is constant pressure. Many people are dealing with heavy workloads, financial worries, and family responsibilities, so even when they have free time, their minds are still occupied. Another factor is technology, because people are always checking messages or thinking about work. For example, someone may be sitting at home, but mentally they are still in the office. As a result, real relaxation becomes quite difficult.

Q2

How have modern lifestyles changed the way people spend their leisure hours?

Sample response

Modern lifestyles have made leisure time more convenient, but also more fragmented. People now spend a lot of their free time on phones, streaming platforms, or social media, so entertainment is available instantly. In the past, leisure often involved more face-to-face interaction or outdoor activities, whereas now it can be more individual and screen-based. For instance, instead of meeting friends every evening, many people just chat online or watch content alone. So the range of options has expanded, but the way people enjoy them has definitely changed.

Q3

Do you think people today have more enjoyable choices than in the past? Why or why not?

Sample response

Yes, I’d say people today generally have more choices for enjoyment than previous generations. There are far more options now, from online courses and gaming to affordable travel and a huge variety of sports and creative hobbies. However, having more choice does not always mean people enjoy themselves more, because too many options can be overwhelming. In the past, entertainment was more limited, but it may also have been more meaningful and social in some cases. So overall, the variety is greater today, but the quality of enjoyment depends on how people use those choices.

Q4

What benefits can regular hobbies bring to individuals and society?

Sample response

Regular hobbies can be beneficial in several ways. On an individual level, they reduce stress, improve mental health, and give people a sense of progress outside work or study. On a social level, hobbies can build communities, because people meet others through clubs, classes, or shared interests. For example, team sports encourage cooperation, while artistic hobbies can support local cultural life. So hobbies are not just personal pleasures; they can also strengthen social connections and well-being.

Q5

How important is it for children to have time for enjoyment outside schoolwork?

Sample response

I think it’s extremely important for children to have time for enjoyment beyond schoolwork. Play and leisure help them develop creativity, social skills, and emotional balance, which are just as important as academic success. If children are under constant pressure to study, they may become stressed or lose motivation altogether. For example, activities like drawing, sport, or simply playing with friends can teach teamwork and problem-solving in a natural way. In the long run, a healthy balance probably helps children perform better academically as well.

Q6

Do you think technology has improved or reduced the quality of people's leisure time?

Sample response

I think technology has done both, but overall it has improved leisure time if used wisely. It has made entertainment, learning, and communication much more accessible, so people can explore hobbies that were harder to access in the past. For instance, someone can learn photography, yoga, or even a language from home. The downside is that technology can also make leisure more passive and addictive, especially with endless scrolling. So in my view, the impact is mostly positive, but only when people use technology intentionally rather than letting it control their free time.
